When winter arrives, it brings along snow and ice, shorter days, and colder weather. While this can make it difficult to want to go outside or get inspired to try new things, there are many activities that you can do to take advantage of the winter season. Whether you prefer the warm and cozy indoors, or to venture out into a land of snowflakes, we’ve got some ideas for some winter fun:
Keeping it cozy inside
Unplug! Winter is a great time to turn off your devices and reconnect with friends and family. Gather your friends together and host a game night. If you love holiday movies, host a movie marathon. You can even have a wrapping party where everyone gets together and wraps each other’s gifts!
Rediscover the heart of the home. Now that we’ve retreated indoors for the season, it’s a great time to reconnect with your kitchen, too! Plan a meal and have each family member cook a different course. Then enjoy the meal together around the table, or set up an indoor picnic. And of course, it’s always fun to bake cookies and other sweet treats together – they make the house smell delicious and also make great holiday gifts! Or simmer some mulled wine, which will taste great and also make the whole home smell delightful.
Learn something new. If you are crafty, you can use your skills to make homemade gifts and ornaments. If you’ve always wanted to learn to knit, now is a great time! And you can make blankets, scarves and hats to use as gifts, too!
Host a football party. Winter is a great time to host a football party and root for your favorite team. Apps and cold brews pair well with good friends and good times!
Take some time for yourself. When it’s cold and snowy outside, it’s the best time to cozy up by the fire and read a good book by the fire. Or, exercise your brain with a crossword puzzle, sudoku puzzle, or journal. Enjoy an in-home spa day by pampering yourself with a facial mask and enjoying a relaxing bath. Watch the snow fall while you take a few moments to meditate.
Embrace your space. Spending more time inside means it’s a great time to make indoor changes. You can “Feng Shui” your space for optimal balance. Paint a wall, move the furniture around, or redecorate a room.
The great white outdoors
Embrace the snow! Winter gives us a slew of outdoor activities like ice skating, sledding, and skiing. If there is fresh snow on the ground, build a snowman, snow angel, or snow fort. Have a snowball fight or make snow sculptures. Go ice skating, or, If you haven’t already, experience the one-of-a-kind ice bumper cars at the Alex and Ani City Center.
Take it outside. Scour Pinterest for some great winter photos and the go on a winter photo scavenger hunt. Take a winter hike or go for a run in the crisp cold air. Go for an evening walk and gaze at the stars, or just watch the magic of snowflakes falling to the ground.
Get out of the house. There are some great places you can visit in the winter like your local museum, bowling alley, or even an indoor water park. Get some exercise by attending a yoga class or visiting the gym. Learn something new by taking an art class. See a holiday themed play or attend a tree lighting.
Backyard fun. Invite friends over for a bonfire. Get bundled up and enjoy warmth of the fire while you make s’mores and enjoy hot cocoa.
Get out of town. If you really want to avoid the cold and snow, winter is a great time for a vacation. Plus, you can take advantage of winter flight deals. Just because there’s snow on the ground at home doesn’t mean you can’t go somewhere and put your toes in the sand!
Give back. Winter is a time when not everyone is fortunate enough to have a cozy fire to warm up to or family to gather with. Consider sending a care package to a soldier. Shovel snow for someone in need. Volunteer at a soup kitchen. If your health allows for it, take the Polar Bear plunge. Winter is the season of giving and we cannot forget those who are less fortunate than us.
Although the weather is colder and snow may cover the ground, there’s still plenty of winter fun activities. Whether cozying up by a fire and sharing a meal with family and friends, or venturing out to make a snowman or try something new, winter can be a fun and magical time. Take advantage of all it has to offer.
